How to Pride: Practical Guide

By Juliet Brown, Director of Operations and Development

Our team at the Community Center has celebrated a lot of pride events over the years. Here is our best advice for making the most of it.

Talk to people. Don't be afraid to strike up a conversation! Comment on someone's outfit or ask where they got their food. You'd be surprised how heartwarming it is to connect with a stranger who is feeling the same love you are.

Eat and hydrate. Have a nutritious breakfast and bring or plan to buy lots of water. A friend once fainted at NYC Pride because he hadn't eaten or drunk enough — it took a while for medics to reach him in the crowd. Don't be that guy!

Prepare for the weather. Sunblock, sunglasses, and a hat — you won't regret it. And if you splurge on a rainbow umbrella you'll be on trend if it rains!

Bring a stroller if you have little ones. Pack a plushie, a color wonder book, and top it off with a balloon from the festival. Leave when YOU are ready to leave.

Wear comfortable shoes. This is your day to shine, but don't pick today to break in a new pair of heels. Grab an old pair of Converse or sandals and tie-dye or embellish them to match your outfit. Express yourself without your feet screaming at you!

Be safe about new connections. Whether you're looking for love or just a fun moment, bring protection, meet in public, and tell your friends where you're going. Most importantly, trust your instincts. Pride is the perfect place to get a vibe check!

Bring a sign. Pride is not just a party, it's a political statement. We are marching for our lives. Be funny, be witty, be direct. Your sign will inspire all of us.
