Institute for Cultural Competency©

The Center's Institute for Cultural Competency© session on November 7, 2008 was attended by 60 individuals, representing 20 health and human service organizations in the Hudson Valley working to improve services for LGBTQ people. Participants said they learned LGBTQ people want freedom from prejudice, legal equality, and to know that their courage in coming out to providers will be met with understanding and respect. Participant providers said they learned that they can increase safety and improve service provision to their LGBTQ clients by approaching gender and sexuality with more inclusive terms. They said they could use "partner" when asking about relationships and include "transgender" on their forms. Nearly all providers said the training was very relevant to their work and are interested in additional training. Plans are underway for a Part II session in the spring.
